1. Tampa Bay 27, Eagles 10, 2003 NFC Championship, Jan. 19, Veterans Stadium: Nearly every long-suffering Philly fan smelled the Super Bowl. This was to be the emotional rescue for an entire lost generation. Instead it was the most crushing disappointment in Philly history.

2. Toronto 8, Phillies 6, deciding Game 6, 1993 World Series, Oct. 23, Toronto: Here's the pitch...No, no, no, Mitch! For a motley crew that wasn't supposed to be there, Joe Carter's blow was a cruel way to go.

3. Edmonton 3, Flyers 1, Game 7, 1987 Stanley Cup Finals, May 31, Edmonton: Flyers won thrilling Game 6 at the Spectrum to force first Game 7 in Finals since 1971. Losing goalie Ron Hextall won Conn Smythe.

4. St. Louis Rams 29, Eagles 24, 2002 NFC Championship Game, Jan. 27, St. Louis: Few expected the Eagles to win, but leading at halftime and having a chance on the last possession didn't mitigate the disappointment.

5. New Jersey 2, Flyers 1, Game 7, 2000 Eastern Conference Finals, May 26, First Union Center: Eric Lindros' last stand. He was decked early by Scott Stevens for concussion No. 6 - his fourth in five months. Devils came back from a 1-3 series deficit.

6. Bears 20, Eagles 12, 1988 NFC divisional playoff, Dec. 31, Soldier Field: The Fog Bowl. Maybe Buddy Ryan's best team. One Eagles TD called back, a Randall Cunningham pass dropped in the end zone by Keith Jackson. Cunningham threw for 407 yards.

7. Baltimore 5, Phillies 0, clinching Game 5 of 1983 World Series, Oct. 16, Veterans Stadium: Phillies dropped four straight. It would be a 10-year drought till their next Fall Classic.

8. Detroit sweeps Flyers in 1997 Stanley Cup Finals: Flyers outscored, 16-6. "A choking situation," soon-to-be-fired coach Terry Murray said before the sweep game.

9. New Jersey 101, Sixers 98, deciding Game 5, 1984 first round, April 26, Spectrum: Defending NBA champs lose all three at home in big letdown.

10. Milwaukee 113, Sixers 112, Game 7, 1986 Eastern Conference semifinals, May 11, Milwaukee: In what was a breakout year for a young Charles Barkley, this may have been his best chance to win a title here; Moses Malone, Julius Erving and Maurice Cheeks were still going strong.

11. Montreal 4, Flyers 2, deciding Game 6, 1989 Wales Conference Finals, May 11, Spectrum: Flyers would miss playoffs next five years.

12. Redskins 20, Eagles 6, 1991 NFC Wild Card game, Jan. 5, Veterans Stadium: Buddy Ryan's last stand. Despite his Gang Green defense and Randall, he'd never win a playoff game.

13. Ottawa 2, Flyers 1, OT, deciding Game 5, 2002 Eastern Conference first round, April 26, First Union Center: Completing an unprecedented offensive collapse, Flyers lose in first round for fourth time in five years. They scored two goals in the series, prompting firing of Bill Barber.

14. Cowboys 21, Eagles 20, Sept. 15, 1997, Texas Stadium: On a Monday night, the Ray Rhodes era would never recover. The Eagles blew a 17-6 lead, then rallied with a Ty Detmer-to-Freddie Solomon strike to the Dallas 4 with four seconds left. Easy game-winning field goal try for Chris Boniol, only holder Tom Hutton dropped the snap, tried to run and was tackled.

15. Detroit Pistons 93, Sixers 89, OT, deciding Game 6, 2003 Eastern Conference semifinals, May 16, First Union Center: Last game of Larry Brown era. Sixers can't get off a shot in last 14 seconds of regulation. Allen Iverson arrives half-hour before tip-off.

16. Pistons 78, Sixers 77, Game 5, 2003 Eastern Conference semifinals, May 14, Palace of Auburn Hills: Sixers lose series momentum on buzzer-beating drive by Chucky Atkins.

17. Dallas 25, Eagles 13, Veterans Stadium, Dec. 15, 1991: Eagles had won six straight to stay in playoff picture. Had sacked Troy Aikman 11 times in previous meeting. Under disrespected Rich Kotite, Eagles missed playoffs for first time in four years.

18. Buffalo 8, Flyers 0, clinching Game 6 of 2001 Eastern Conference first round, April 21, Buffalo: Humiliating surrender; so much for a 100-point season.

19. Seattle 38, Eagles 0, 1998 season opener, Sept. 6, Veterans Stadium: Welcome to the beginning of the end of the Rhodes era. With the Eagles front office being parodied on signs, the sad joke was the Eagles were a long way from hitting Rhodes' definition of "rock bottom."

20. Dallas 34, Eagles 0, Nov. 2, 1998, Veterans Stadium: Welcome to rock bottom. On Monday Night Football, the nation had lots of laughs.

General, don't know if this qualifies as devastating but the Bills comeback vs the Oilers in the 1992 playoffs. It was definitely THE comeback but it was also devastating to Oiler fans.

Spive- You didn't answer. Would you tap that?

I'd nail Tanya Harding in a minute. She's trashy, nasty and was really good in her honeymoon video. Her skating was a 8.5 but her performance in the video was a 10. I'd just make sure there were no hubcaps around her trailer while I was knocking it out.

OILERS/BILLS has to be the worst beat ever in pro sports. I grew up in Houston, and I remember that game as if it happened yesterday. That Oilers team wasnt an avg team with a chance that year, they were the best team in the NFL after handing it to SF at home 14-3 I believe a couple of weeks before. KEEP IN MIND THAT THE CITY OF HOUSTON HAD NEVER WON A CHAMPIONSHIP IN ANY SPORT!! At halftime I was about to switch it off and join some friends to celebrate (out of respect to the Bills). But like a bad train wreck that draws your attention, I decided to watch JUST a couple more plays and after another INT for a TD by HOU just after the half, Buffalo was stick three forks in them done. I jokingly told one of my buddies that didnt watch the NFL religiously "I bet Buffalo comes back". Even HE knew that wasnt going to happen. In a cruel twist of fate, HOU had oppurtunites to close the game out late, but every Oiler's fan knew the FG would be missed.

In Texas, football is less a sport than a religion. That game didnt just ruin a season, it dismantled a franchise, and ultimately stole professional football from the Houston area for several years. Bud Adams had little choice but to move the team shortly thereafter. What I dont understand is why a lot of Houstonians hated Bud but still rooted for the Titans.

That's why those two Rockets championship runs were OHH-SOO SWEEET. That Mario Elie Kiss of DEATH Trey almost fully recoverd me. And the phrase "never underestimate the HEART of a CHAMPION!" Rudy T's statement was more than just a trendy quote. The city of Houston now fully realized that it had a title, and no one (not even big chief triangle) could ever take that away. The city was now a CHAMPIONSHIP city, and could now be mentioned in the same sentences with Boston, LA, CHI etc. It's a big deal to not have a championship, you get left out of all the coversation regarding great teams from the past. I still think a Rockets/Bulls series would have been classic during those two years.

IMO, college sports are more emotionally attaching. If you attended a university you have more staked. You are actually a part of that institution. And no single sporting event means more for hopes and dreams than each and every college football game. In the NCAA football season the playoffs start almost every year with game one.

If this is a list of all time bad beats for philly teams, gotta include game 4 of the 1993 WS.

Blue Jays 15 Phillies 14.

Philly was up 14 - 9 going to the eigth inning, jays score 6 , take 3 - 1 series lead effectively killing phillies hopes.

1992 western conference final Leafs v. Kings

99 nets winning goal on questionable penalty, then high-sticks a leaf. No penalty called.

There's always next year, like in 75, 90-93, 99 &
